Resident University Prospectus 2010/11

rulistenin

Find out what’s going at the Resident University this year by having a look at the prospectus for 2010/11.  Some dates and venues are still being confirmed, and further workshops and events will be added as the year goes on.

We have set out five key objectives for this year’s Resident University programme.  They are, to help residents and grassroots groups:

  1. to influence decision makers more confidently;
  2. to connect with and communicate with other people and groups from different communities;
  3. to improve and sustain the way they secure and manage resources;
  4. to collaborate more effectively in small groups and get better at managing themselves;
  5. to find out about and develop new thinking and ways of applying it in practice.

We have organised the Prospectus into five corresponding programme streams.  Each stream will include different forms of learning, such as workshops, seminars, online courses, briefings and lectures.   The programme streams are:

  1. 1. Influencing

How do we get better at getting our point across/knowing the right people to reach?

Helping groups and active citizens get better at being able to influence the decisions that affect them (and, where possible, to help local decision makers get better at listening).

  1. 2. Communicating

How do we get better at listening and letting people know what we’re doing?

Getting better at networking and letting other people know what is being done (and that they can influence the decisions that affect them).

  1. 3. Getting and Managing Resources

How do we get more time/money/skilled and committed people and manage better what we have?

Sustaining and managing resources – and, in particular, helping people develop employment and employability through community action.

  1. 4. Group Working

Can we work better as a team and understand how to develop the group?

Helping groups and representatives, community ‘leaders’ and people with the potential to sustain and grow community action to take opportunities to get better at managing and developing themselves and their groups.

  1. 5. Ideas into Action

Is there a way that might work of……………………

Inspiring, challenging, testing and rewarding new ideas relating to grassroots communities that could change the places we live for the better.

The table below gives you an overview of what will be happening in each of these streams.  Or, you can download a more detailed version.

Co-producing Birmingham

Who makes neighbourhoods and the public services they benefit from?  And how could both be improved if public agencies had a better idea of how to join up what they can do with what communities do for themselves?  This the starting point for exploring what the idea of ‘co-production’ – the recognition of all of the different inputs that go into producing something – might mean for neighbourhoods in Birmingham.

Resident University will be holding a series of special lectures, seminars and workshops to look at these questions in more detail, and to learn from what is already happening in neighb0urhoods across the city.  Places where residents, community groups and public services are already redefining our understanding of who really does make our neighbourhoods.

The first of the these events will be on the morning of February 10th at the Nishkam Centre, start time tbc.  To get involved, please contact us.

To find out more about what co-production, you can download a copy of an initial briefing paper written for Birmingham City Council by the Chamberlain Forum

Digital Inclusion – Saturday 23rd January

How can you use the internet to benefit your community? What does digital inclusion really mean, and what’s stopping the use of digital technology become a reality everywhere?

These are some of the questions that will be hotly debated this Saturday at the Digital Inclusion ‘Unconference’. Organised by ‘We share stuff’ and supported by Resident University.

Resident University will be running a session at the beginning of the day, where we will be hearing from resident experts who are already using social media to make things happen in their area, and looking at what we can do to support more people to do the same.

For more information, visit the ‘we share stuff’ site, or contact Resident University on 07795 448 462

Also look out for a new Resident University briefing that explains what social media is all about, and where you can go for help, support and advice.
